Smog Check Inspector License Requirements Explained
There are two requirements that must be met to apply for the Smog Inspector licensing exam.
First Requirement: You must meet ANY ONE of the following options:
• Complete the BAR Engine and Emissions Fundamentals Training / Level-1 Training
• This option is for applicants with little or no automotive repair experience or formal training.
• Applicants using this option do not need any automotive repair experience verification.
• Have current ASE certifications in A6 (Electrical), A8 (Engine Performance) and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance).
• Have two-years’ experience in engine performance repairs.
• Submit BAR Experience Verification Form with application.
• Have an AA/AS degree in automotive technology.
• Have 1-year experience in the engine performance area.
• Complete BAR Experience Verification Form
• Submit transcripts from your college with your application.
• Have a Certificate from a college or private school showing a minimum of 720 hours course work including a minimum of 280 hours in engine performance areas.
• Have 1-year experience in the engine performance area.
• Submit BAR Experience Verification Form with application.
• Submit transcripts from your school with your application.
• UTI or WyoTech grads can use this option.
• Have a current BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training Certificate (ASE Alternative)
• Have 2-years’ experience in the engine performance area.
• Submit BAR Experience Verification Form with application.
• 2-years compatible military training/experience in the engine performance area.
Second Requirement:
Level-2 Training
• All applicants must complete Level-2 Training.
