Smog Check Inspector License Classes

Qualifications

To become licensed as a Smog Check Inspector, all applicants must successfully:
• Complete Level 2 training.
• Applicants with little or no experience must also complete Level 1 Training.
• Applicants that possess ASE A6, A8 and L1 certification or an AA/AS degree or Certificate in automotive technology; or have 2-years’ experience and have completed BAR specified training are not required to have Level 1 Training.

Level 1 Training is required for Inspector candidates with little or no experience.* This training provides students with the knowledge of engine and emission control systems necessary to conduct accurate smog inspections. Successful completion includes the ability to demonstrate minimum levels of competency related to engine and emission control systems. The training is a minimum of 68 hours and must be completed at a BAR-certified school.

Level 2 Training must be completed by all Inspector license applicants. This training covers the program laws, regulations, and procedures. Successful completion includes the ability to demonstrate minimum levels of competency-related vehicle inspections. The training is a minimum of 28 hours and must be completed at a BAR-certified school.

After completing the required training applicants must pass a state examination.

Smog Check Repair Technician License Classes

These classes are required for licensed Smog Check Repair Technicians renewing their repair technicians license. Classes are 12-hours, which when combined with the mandated 4-hour inspector online training sastifies the BAR’s 16-hour training requirement.

The curriculum is always interesting and varied. The materials covered are real world that will improve your skills as a smog check repair technician and inspector. No text book necessary.

Cost: $300. 00

This training provides students with comprehensive knowledge related to the diagnosis and repair of Smog Check failures. The training is a minimum of 72 hours and must be completed at a BAR-certified school. This class may be used to satisfy the ASE certification requirements for Smog Check Repair Technician license and license renewal. Training is valid for 5 years.

Cost: $1,275.00

This training is a minimum of 8 hours, which may include a 4-hour on-line component. Training hours could vary depending on the terms of the citation. Classes are scheduled based on demand.
